Hundreds of people waited hours on Tuesday for a chance at free holiday meals in Cobb County.
The Center for Family Resources and the Department of Children and Family Services are helping hundreds of Cobb County families that are in need.
As numbers are called out in the Cobb County Civic Center, families headed to case workers to show they need help to get them through the holidays. Some are out of work, others are struggling to get by financially.
"I'm here for assistance because I haven't worked in a while, but I just got a job. I just started a job on October 1st. Me getting a check, it's going toward past bills and getting caught up," said Lachelle Jones of Smryna.
The "Thanks for Giving" program expects to assist 1,400 people in Cobb County by providing food baskets for Thanksgiving and Christmas, as well as presents under the tree for the families of those being helped.
"It's just been a really tough time for everyone. People that we've never seen before, people that we've never assisted before are receiving assistance now," said Danielle Reighard of The Center for Family Resources.
Jones says she wasn't surprised by the number of people needing help.
"This time of year a lot of people could use the help because there's already a strain to just pay your everyday bills, but you want to do so much for your kids and you want them to have a nice Christmas but you know you can't afford I," said Jones.
Families in need can register on Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cobb County Civic Center to receive Thanksgiving meals. The Cobb County Civic Center is located at 548 South Marietta Parkway in Marietta.
