Dallas couple steals thousands from Houston gymnasts, DA's office says

HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

Prosecutors have charged a Dallas couple on accusations they stole more than $100,000 from a Houston-area gymnast group.

Andrea Dawn Maxwell, 38, and Donald Lagrone, 49, are charged with aggregate theft from a non-profit.

In April 2011, Maxwell and Lagrone set up a fake travel agency in Dallas and raised $400,000 by selling bogus travel vouchers, the Harris County District Attorney's Office says.  The agency was likened to a Ponzi scheme.

The Houston-area gymnast group, ACRO Sports Booster Club, reached out to Maxwell and Lagrone to set up a kids club.  As time went on, ACRO ran into trouble when they asked for confirmation numbers and receipts after Disney said they could not locate them.

At one point, someone called the DA's office to investigate the travel agency.  The DA's Office discovered the agency was ripe for fraud and developed a case.  Maxwell and Lagrone were arrested Tuesday evening.

The couple is in Harris County Jail on $200,000 bond.
