A former Galveston mayor has accused a former assistant of stealing up to $367,000 from her.
Prosecutors have charged Mary Castano with first-degree felony theft.
Castano started out as Lyda Ann Thomas' office manager and worked her way up to become Thomas' assistant, the Galveston County District Attorney's Office says. She stole the money from Lyda Ann Thomas in several different schemes from December 2004 to January 2012.
If convicted, she could get life in prison.
Her bond was initially set at $600,000 but was later reduced to $100,000.
