2 arrested in Univ. of Houston robberies

Posted: Updated:

Three people have been charged, two of them arrested, in connection to multiple aggravated robbery cases reported on or near the University of Houston campus.

Officers with the University of Houston Department of Public Safety have arrested Ricardo Jamal Tangarife and Anthony Theus and are searching for Sue Ortiz in the case. Campus police are also searching for four other people who are considered persons of interest.

Three robberies took place within one week with the last one reported on Friday, Sept. 21.

Within 45 minutes of the Sept. 21 robbery, the credit card stolen in the incident was used at a shoe store in Memorial City Mall. Surveillance video shows the robbery suspect and a young woman using the credit card and a clerk allowing them to use the car to buy shoes.

Police have named Tangarife as the robbery suspect and Theus as the clerk who allowed the stolen credit card transactions , while Sue Ortiz has been identified as the female who took part in the transaction and served as the getaway driver during the Sept. 21 robbery in the campus parking lot. Ortiz is a performer at an erotic night club.

Tangarife was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery less than a day after the warrant was filed for his arrest. Theus was arrested and charged with credit card abuse.

"The gunman was identified by a spectacular investigation by UH personnel," said University of Houston Police Chief Ceaser Moore. "We are still investigating the possibility that the arrested parties are part of a criminal enterprise operating throughout our city."

The five UHDPS officers took part in the investigation were part of a unit formed to solve the recent robbery cases.

None of the suspects have ties to the university.
