HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

The Houston Astros named Washington Nationals third base coach Bo Porter as their new manager on Thursday.

"His sense of urgency and his skill set are very impressive," said Jim Crane, Astros owner.

Porter replaces Brad Mills who was fired last month and interim manager Tony DeFrancesco.

"Bo has the knowledge," said Jeff Luhnow, Astros general manager.

"I said I wasn't going to do it, but Bo knows baseball."

Porter's wife is from Houston and they make their offseason home here.

"It actually hit me yesterday," Porter said. "I talked to my wife after I finished meeting with Jim, (team president) George (Postolos), and Jeff.

"This is very special for her because my wife is from Houston. She grew up on the southwest side of Houston. She is a Westbury High School graduate. I guess you could say it's more of a chill down here spine because I get to come home. We get to be at home."

Porter initially interviewed for the job two weeks ago.

When he arrived in Houston to meet with the Astros owner Jim Crane picked up Porter at the airport.

He is in his second season as the Nationals third base coach.

Porter spent one sent on the Major League staff with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2010.

He began that season as the Diamondbacks third base coach, but was promoted to bench coach replacing Kirk Gibson who took over as manager in July.

Prior to that Porter was the Miami Marlins third base coach and outfield/baserunning instructor from 2007-2009.

Before joining the Marlins big league staff, he spent two seasons managing and coaching in their farm system, where he began his coaching career in 2005.

The following season Porter managed Jamestown in the New York-Penn League and had a 33-39 record.

Porter played ten years of professional baseball and spent parts of three seasons in the big leagues with the Chicago White Sox (1999), Oakland A's (2000) and the Texas Rangers (2001).

In the 2000 American League Divisional Series with the A's, Porter played in two games with one at bat.

He got a hit off of New York Yankees pitcher Dwight Gooden.

Porter played in 1064 games during ten seasons in the minor leagues, hitting .269 with 113 home runs, 502 RBIs and 236 stolen bases.

"His style is his biggest asset," Luhnow said. "He is a natural born leader."
