Police are searching for one of two men who tried to rob a family inside a southeast Houston home; the other man involved in the robbery was fatally shot.
A man had just parked a car in the driveway of his sister's home on Southbank near Glenhurst Drive when Houston police say he was approached by two men and threatened with a gun. They forced the driver, later identified by police as Larry Covington, 58, into the home where his sister and teen daughter were waiting inside.
The two men pushed the three relatives to the floor and demanded cash from them. As one of the two men began searching through the home, Covington pulled out a gun and shot one of the home invasion suspects. That suspect died inside the home.
After the other suspect and Covington fired gunshots toward each other, that suspect ran away from the home and did not take anything with him.
Covington, who exchanged gunfire with the home invasion suspect, was treated for a head injury.
Detectives are trying to determine if the robbery attempt was random or if the family was targeted.
Covington retired from the Houston Fire Department in 2011 after a 37-year career as a firefighter.
