Houston is a top performer when it comes to growth for women-owned businesses, but sometimes it can be a surprise where you find those women in charge.
When Gloria Zermeno and her brother started their concrete company, they focused on small jobs like driveways and sidewalks.
Four years later, Z Readymix has a much larger fleet of trucks and the ability to produce custom-made concrete for a variety of projects.
In a male-dominated business, Gloria had to convince customers she was up to the task.
"I still get those questions about: you're a woman in the construction business; can we rely on you? Can we trust in you giving us good service? It's definitely been a challenge," she said.
She is hopeful Houston's healthy construction climate offers a lot of opportunity for her company to continue growing.
