Three years ago, just about this time, FOX 26 News was approached by a very special young mother from the Clear Lake area. She had a message for everyone and every family to be aware of their health and that of their relatives; she and two of her classmates, all three young mothers who grew up together, were battling cancer.

When the journey started in 2009 with Kathy Nuernberg, she was trying to overcome cervical cancer. Her friend Julie had already died of melanoma, shortly after giving birth to her youngest child.

Nuernberg's friend Michelle was battling Stage 4 breast cancer. She died in 2011.

Kathy Nuernberg lost her fight with cancer on Tuesday, but not without leaving a powerful message for others.
