HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

A group of students at Bellaire High School will be screened for tuberculosis after the City of Houston determined that one person at the school is undergoing testing and treatment for a suspected case of the bacterial infection.

Principal Michael McDonough sent the following letter on Monday to parents of Bellaire High School students:

Dear Parents,

I recently met with representatives from the City of HoustonHealth Department. They informed me that an individual at our school is beingevaluated and treated for a suspected case of tuberculosis (TB). Fortunately, the individual is recovering and feeling much better.

According to the health officials, tuberculosis is abacterial infection that can be contagious if it becomes an active disease;however, it is a difficult disease to catch because it is only spread throughthe air and the environmental conditions need to be just right. Casual contactis generally not sufficient for transmission of the TB bacteria.

At this time, we have not identified any other person on ourcampus with symptoms of TB. We are taking this situation seriously and will beworking closely with the Houston Health Department to identify any student orstaff that should be tested for TB infection.

Determination of who needs testing is based on the type ofexposure a student or staff has had to the sick individual. If your child isrecommended for testing, a separate letter and consent form will be sent homenext week.

Houston Health Department officials will be on campus onThursday, September 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the science conference center, to give apresentation to parents about tuberculosis and answer any questions you mighthave.

Additional information about tuberculosis can be found atthe Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website http://www.cdc.gov/tb/

A meeting, which will include parents and staff, is scheduled to take place Thursday with a tuberculosis expert. The screenings of students, who have been pre-identified, will take place  during the week of Sept. 24.
