The federal government will finally help first responders and residents who lived near ground zero battling with cancer, according to the New York Post.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health will announce that 50 types of cancer should be covered under the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.
The new regulations would allow cancer victims to receive compensation.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health announced the change Monday, the AP reported. The institute said last June it favored expanding the $4.3 billion health program to include cancer.
James Zadroga was a NYPD officer who died of a respiratory disease that has been attributed to his participation in rescue and recovery efforts at Ground Zero following the September 11 attacks.
