Eat healthy, save on food budget at co-op

Inside a church in Montrose, there's a tenant with a distinctive smell: freshness.

"We're here to meet you where you are on your food journey. If where you are is unhappy with the way supermarket produce tastes and unhappy wrangling kids in the checkout line trying to get them to not pick up the candy bar, what I can offer you is an alternative shopping model where there's nothing in here that your child could pick up or bite into that isn't good for them," said Tiffany Tyler, chair of the board of the Central City Co-Op.
Central City Co-op is a member owned and operated food store offering organic produce on a budget.
"We've all had the experience of going into the supermarket, paying 30 dollars and still not having dinner when you get home, whereas here you know exactly how much you've spent on produce, you know it's all fresh, organic and sustainable," said Tyler.
Here's how it works.  Each week you pre order a share online or in person.
"There's dinner in the basket whether you add animal protein to it or not," said Tyler.
Shares range in price from $14 to $36.  Then stop by Wednesday to pick up.
"What you would have had today if you preordered the fruit share, you would have had bananas, nectarines, plums, golden delicious apples and red grapes," said Tyler.
There's also an open market stocked with extra produce and organic dry goods.
"I really want to try and not only help local farmers but be more conscious of things I'm putting in my body, and the impact we're having overall because everything costs gas," said Christina Cantu, a first time shopper.
With four kids, Cantu says she has more time than money.  That's why the Co-Op offers volunteers a discount on food or membership.
"We need people to come through the door and explore and shop with us. We need people to understand the distance from farm to fork matters., " said Tyler.
Central City Co-Op is open Wednesdays from 9AM until 6PM inside Grace Lutheran Church at 2515 Waugh.  Shoppers must place their share order by Sunday evening.
