Stillwater sisters shock doctors with crash recovery

Posted: Updated:
ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Head-on crashes at highway speeds are nearly always fatal, but two Stillwater sisters who were injured in Lake Elmo not only survived -- they are shocking their doctors with their recovery.

Investigators say the man who caused the crash, 46-year-old Jon Wentz, shouldn't have been driving at all when he caused the crash on Highway 5 that left him critically injured along with Marah and Kalley Sobczak.

In the eight days since the crash, the Sobczak sisters have undergone six surgeries -- two for Kalley and four for Marah. Some of the procedures lasted as long as seven hours.

The girls' parents, Robin and Kevin Sobczak, told FOX 9 News they feel blessed because despite the horrific crash, their daughters' recoveries are already better than doctors had hoped.

Kalley, 15, should recover fully and could be home by next week, but 20-year-old Marah was hurt the worst. It took 50 minutes to extract the two-time state hockey champion out of the wreckage -- but doctors say her prognosis is still a positive one.

Marah Sobczak had expected to start her junior year at Gustavus Adolphus College and resume her role as goalie, and the family still isn't sure of how the crash could impact her financial aid.

Robin and Kevin Sobczak say both of their daughters are asking about school and staying focused on their goals. Meanwhile, the crash investigation continues while Wentz remains in critical condition.

The sisters still have a lot of rehabilitation ahead of them, and insurance won't cover all of it. A fund has been established to help the family, and donations can be made to the Sobczak Family at any Bremier Bank.
