A high school teacher has been suspended after deputies say they found 53 pounds of marijuana inside her car.
Percy Melton, a teacher at Elsik High School, is charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
Around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, a detective with the Combined Anti-Drug Task Force stopped Melton as she was headed eastbound on Interstate 10 between Vinton and Sulphur, according to the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office.
The detective noticed Melton was acting suspicious and asked to search her vehicle. She refused.
A K-9 alerted the detective to narcotics inside her car. A search discovered around 53 pounds of pot wrapped in cellophane and trash bags inside two duffel bags. Its street value was worth over $120,000.
Melton was arrested and taken to the Calcasieu Correctional Center.
She is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, an Alief Independent School District spokeswoman said.
