We're discussing generators on the FOXRAD Hurricane Briefing. There are several kinds out there, but we'll focus on the most common: portable gasoline powered.
Tim Keener with Northern Tool and Equipment helps answer some questions about picking one out for your home. There are lots of things to remember concerning safety with these machines-
Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Never operate indoors or in a garage. It must run in a well-ventilated area outside.
Avoid electrocution. Only a qualified electrician should hook up into your home wiring. Use heavy duty, outdoor-rated cords plugged directly into the generator.
Safely transport and store gasoline. Keep fuel outside and in properly labeled gasoline safe containers. Allow generator to cool before refueling.
