HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

Mike Davis, who led Indiana to the Final Four in 2002 and was named Conference USA Coach of the Year at UAB after the 2010-2011 season, has agreed to become the interim coach at Texas Southern.

The TSU job opened last month when Tony Harvey resigned for personal reasons.

"It's a great opportunity for me to get back into coaching," Davis said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "I've researched Texas Southern's program.

"I thing Harvey left some real good players there. They had a good program and it's one of the better jobs in the (SWAC) conference, and I'm excited to get back working and teaching."

And TSU athletics director Charles McClelland said he is just as excited.

"When you look at his professionalism, his won-loss record, his ability to take Indiana to the national championship game, Coach of the Year in Conference USA, four 20-win seasons (at UAB), that's exactly what Texas Southern is looking for in a basketball coach," said McClelland.

Davis' final season at UAB was not an easy one for him, personally or professionally.

"I had a lot of personal problems with my family last year," Davis said. "So I was really distracted from the coaching standpoint in the regular season.

"My mom passed away and I had two nephews pass away in a three-month period before the season started, and that kind of got me off key a little bit. I got it back at the end of the year, but by that time we were already in conference play.

"I have my focus and my drive back and I'm ready to get back into the flow."

Davis was fired by UAB in March after the Blazers went 15-16 overall, 9-7 in conference play and finished fifth in C-USA.

In six seasons at UAB Davis compiled a 122-72 record, taking the Blazers to the NIT three times and to the NCAA Tournament in 2011.

That season UAB won its first Conference USA regular season championship.

During his stint with the Blazers Davis averaged 20 wins and 10 conference victories a season.

McClelland said Davis is taking the TSU job on an interim basis because that's what the "process" called for.

Davis has no problem with that.

"I'm great with it," Davis said. "I'm excited just to get back on the floor.

"I love coaching, love teaching. I love development of young men. I'm just happy that Charles is giving me this opportunity."

Davis replaced Bobby Knight at Indiana in 2000 and ran the Hoosiers program for six years, stepping down after the 2005-2006 season.

Davis was 115-79 with the Hoosiers, making four trips to the NCAA Tournament and one trip to the NIT.

"I bring a lot of experience," Davis said. "My work and my vision always match each other.

"That's the one thing I'm going to try and teach the players at TSU. You're vision and your work have to match and that's been my philosophy for a long time."
