The Rabun County commission chairman says taxpayers will continue to help fund a troubled animal shelter at least until a GBI investigation is complete.
Boggs Mountain Animal Shelter temporarily closed its doors after an undercover FOX 5 I-Team investigation exposed how the director deceived the public.
Lowanda "Peanut" Kilby took cash donations from people with the promise the shelter would not kill the dog they were forced to give up. But time and again, those sponsored dogs were still euthanized.
Rabun County Commission Chairman Butch Darnell says it's too early to pull the $175,000 taxpayer contribution to the Boggs Mountain budget.
"This is not to say that the Rabun County Board of Commissioners is turning a blind eye to this situation. To the contrary, acutely aware of the magnitude and volatility of this situation. The board intends to respectfully and patiently watch the investigative process conducted by law enforcement agencies and to offer our cooperation in every conceivable way and to the fullest extent possible," said Darnell.
Kilby is on indefinite paid leave until the investigation is over.
FOX 5 I-Team reporter Randy Travis will have new information on Kilby's personal financial struggles Wednesday on FOX 5 News at 10.
