Race-car mom jumps headfirst into healthcare issue

Posted: Updated:

Kristin Bumbera knows what's important in life.

"I always grew up knowing health insurance was a good thing. You always needed it in case of emergencies."

When she's not working at the family business, Bumbera Performance Associates in Katy, she's on the race track.  Yeah, she races cars, and she's pretty darn good at it too, but it's the kind of thing that's easy to get hurt doing.

She realized exactly how important health insurance was when she had an emergency: she got pregnant with her son Bently.  She found out her individual health insurance didn't cover pregnancy.

"I was shocked," she says.  "So I called around to other companies to see if I could find another company who did."

No such luck. Long story short, it cost them $10,000 out of pocket to have Bentley.

Here's the dilemma.  Her family business doesn't offer insurance because with just half a dozen or so employees, it would be too expensive.

"We've definitely looked into it many times and unfortunately it's just not something we can handle at this time."

The Supreme Court ruling comes too late to affect her.  Her husband took a job at a large company that offers great benefits.

"I have health insurance so I'm good," she says.

Her experience has given her a keen interest and appreciation for the health care debate, both sides.
