What did your kids do today on summer break? One Houston teenager is celebrating getting her products sold inside the Galleria Mall and far beyond.
This miniature mogul in the making may be small but her cute little company has blossomed into one big business.
"I'm excited. They made it into Nordstrom," says 14-year-old Maddie Robinson.
The Houston teenager started out scrawling on a scratch pad. Now, she has evolved into an entrepreneur. At only 14 years old, you can find her shoe line being sold at a Nordstrom near you.
"I came up with the designs for Nordstrom. I helped design them in the colors they want and I put lights in them. So they light up," explains Maddie.
The teenager started designing what she calls Fish Flops when she was just 8 years old. A few years later, Fish Flops were being manufactured and sold in small boutiques.
Then a few months ago …
"I wrote a letter to the buyers of Nordstrom. I didn't think I would get in but I did," smiles the teen.
Nordstrom decided to sell Fish Flops not only at the Houston location but in 60 stores across the country.
"From California to New York and then some are in Hawaii," says Maddie.
Fish Flops are kids flip flops covered in Maddie's colorful drawings. Every pair comes with Maddie's sweet snapshot attached and a little note explaining how her business was born.
"In 2006, I had an idea to make flip flops that showed my love for swimming, fishing and drawing. I hope you wear them, love them and share them with your friends and I hope they make you smile," the teenager reads from the tag.
The light-up Fish Flops cost about $20. Maddie is also working on designing a new swimming shoe with a twist. I won't give it all away now but I'm sure you'll see them soon.
"It's exciting. I didn't think they (Fish Flops) would come all the way this far. I thought they would just stay in boutiques, but now they're in Nordstrom".
