HOUSTON (FOX 26) -

What comes to mind when you think of orthopedic shoes?  Probably not the word "stylish" but maybe you should think again.

I found some high heels and health shoes that are one in the same.  Shocking right?  Believe me, these are not your parent's orthopedics.

"We have men's diabetic shoes. We have women's diabetic shoes and then we have ones for more of the high fashionable female," says Podiatrist Dr. Gabriel Maislos at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.

That's right: shoes that are healthy for the feet haven't always been pleasing on the eyes or the wardrobe.

"I never thought twice about orthopedic shoes until I started working and I was more on my feet and my feet started hurting," says 24-year old Kristin Foteh.

Foteh feared she would have to turn to ugly, old-fashioned footwear but she lost her painful pumps after finding Dr. Maislos and the entire stylish shoe store he has in his office.

"When people come back here and see the shoes they're shocked," says Dr. Maislos.

So Foteh stopped by to see the updated orthopedics.

"There's a catalog with all different types of shoes and I got these," Foteh says showing off her new stylish strappy black high-heel sandals which are also orthopedic shoes.  "They look really good and they're very comfortable," she says.

"What we do is we take a scan of their feet, from there we determine where they have too much pressure," says Dr. Maislos.

After the fancy machine takes precise foot measurements specially-made pads are placed in the comfy cushion filled shoes.

"It's really soft and it has like what's called a memory foam just like NASA used to use.  So it's great for shock absorption but the most important thing is it provides arch support," Dr. Maislos adds.

There are actually hundreds of these healthy shoes to choose from.  The price range is roughly $130 to $180.  The lining also helps fight fungus and kills bacteria.  You can find Dr. Maislos and his shoes at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital at (713) 541-3199 or on-line at http://www.houstonfootankle.com/.

Who knew shoes that are so good for your feet could be so great for your outfit?

"It's like walking on pillows," smiles Foteh.
