Houston Church Named a Historical Marker

A church founded during the 19th century by African Americans in the Second Ward of Houston has been designated as a state historical marker.

Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church was dedicated on Sunday morning as an Official State of Texas historical marker by the Harris County Historical Commission on behalf of the Texas Historical Commission.

The church, which is located on 2301 Nagle Street, is one of three established in Houston in 1866. Mt. Zion Baptist was originally located in the Second Ward on Canal Street and housed one of three Freedmen's Bureau schools until 1870.

In 1928, Mt. Zion Baptist was moved to the historic Third Ward of Houston.
