Unlicensed Contractors Caught in the Act

Posted:

More than two dozen unlicensed electricians and air conditioning repairmen face fines after getting caught in an undercover sting operation.

Just advertising as someone who does electrical or air conditioning work requires a license.

Same thing goes if you provide someone with a bid or invoice for that kind of work. But Fox 26 Investigates found a lot of folks ignore that law.

State licensing investigators spent a couple of days calling up unlicensed contractors to get bids for jobs.

Those showing up had no idea the homeowner is really an undercover investigator with the Texas Department Of Licensing and Regulation. Bill Kuntz, the Executive Director of that state agency said it's all a matter of public safety.

"They could put the public at harm if they do not wire the house correctly or if they do not vent the furnaces correctly," Kuntz said.

FOX 26 Investigates was there when those who submitted bids get called back to the house.
