A free celebration of gospel music is just hours away.
The United States Congress declared September "Gospel Music Heritage Month".
The celebration was announced a couple of weeks ago.
And tonight, a multi-cultural lineup of local and national gospel music artists will perform at the new light church's east campus.
’This is a reflection of gospel music around the nation and around the world. We'll be paying tribute to Elvis Presley, who's only songs to win a Grammy were gospel music. So the idea of celebrating gospel music heritage came from the rich gospel tradition of Houston," Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said.
Lee wrote the legislation to make the month official.
The celebration begins at 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
