FOX 26's Don Teague has traveled the world as a network correspondent, racking up numerous awards along the way, and he owes it all… to Miss America.
That's right. When Don was 12 years old and living in Los Angeles, he was so taken with KABC anchor, and former Miss America, Tawny Little, he would rush home every night to watch her on the news. Fortunately, however, his love for Tawny quickly took a back seat to his fascination with the actual newscast.
That's one thing you probably didn't know about FOX 26 anchor Don Teague. Here's another: When he was in college, Don worked as an announcer at SeaWorld in San Diego. He loved announcing the various acts and the fireworks shows. He also gained a valuable skill. Says Don, "That job helped me learn how to be comfortable in front of large crowds of people."
It was also during his stint at SeaWorld that Don met his future wife, Kiki. She was a singing and dancing ‘Bathing Beauty' who rode a motorized surf board. How could Don resist? This November, he and Kiki will celebrate their twenty-first wedding anniversary.
Don and Kiki are the proud parents of two teenage daughters… and one donkey. Brewster (the donkey) was in dire need of a forever home, and the Teagues were happy to make room on their ranch. Historically, donkeys have been used in Texas to protect chickens from coyotes, but Brewster is tiny and afraid of coyotes. "So he's failed at his security role," jokes Don, "but he's succeeded in his role as a member of our family."
What does Don like to do for fun? If he didn't work in TV, he'd probably spend more time pursuing his passion for music. Don is a guitar player and singer-songwriter. When he came to Houston, he had to bid his Dallas band mates adieu. "I'm currently Craigslist-dating new bands," says Don with a smile. For the record, his talents are diverse, but his tastes skew a little bit country.
Don is also a published book author and has written several full-length screenplays. One of his scripts even made the Top 40 in 2009 at the Austin Film Festival. His favorite films run the gamut, but he has a soft spot for romantic comedies ... and zombie movies.
Here are some other things you probably don't know about Don Teague:
He spent 11 years as a military pilot and was a captain when he left the service.
He's competed in more than 20 triathlons.
He wrote and produced a film you can find on Netflix ('Song of Songs').
What's his most unusual talent? "I can ride a unicycle and juggle," says Don, "at the same time."
Can Miss America do that?
