RICHARDSON, Texas - For soldiers serving oversees, anything sent from home is a treat. So one North Texas business is doing its part and sending the nation’s military heroes a unique comfort -- hand-rolled cigars.
Johnny Mikes, co-owner of City Cigars in Richardson, said he was once deployed and still has friend in the service. Two years ago he started sending them some of the best cigars in his store.
“I know what it’s like to be on patrol and to be out there. And a good cigar is a great morale booster,” Mikes said.
Last summer he expanded the effort and started the Hero Cigars program. He has since shipped about 1,000 cigars to various detachments.
All of the gifts are top notch. A Cuban native rolls the tobacco leaves by hand.
And in a time of turmoil, Mikes said the soldiers consider the cigars a welcome taste of home.
“The little things go a long way. A good cup of coffee, a candy bar, a good cigar, it really makes their day,” he said.
