HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Sam Houston State University basketball coach Bob Marlin will interview for the vacant head coaching job at Auburn University, according to Bearkats athletics director Bobby Williams.

Williams was contacted by Auburn athletics director Jay Jacobs.

"Auburn called to let me know they are going to speak with Bob and that's okay with us," said Williams in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.

"I think it's a compliment to our program, our university and to Bob for what he has been able to accomplish."

And those accomplishments by Marlin include becoming Sam Houston State's all-time winningest coach and the second winningest coach in Southland Conference history.

"He was my first hire and we've been able to work together for 12 years," said Williams.

"As his friend, I'm happy for him if he gets the opportunity."

Marlin's Bearkats won the 2010 Southland Conference regular season and postseason tournament championships.

Sam Houston State lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Baylor University, but Marlin received national publicity for teaching his players a new zone defense two days before the game, and the strategy almost worked.

Baylor head coach Scott Drew and his players praised the Bearkats' defense after the game.

Marlin has not been available for comment.

Auburn is searching for a replacement for Jeff Lebo, who was fired after six years with the Tigers.
