HOUSTON - The Houston Texans have reached a contract agreement with free agent guard Wade Smith, his agent, Brian Parker, confirmed.
Smith spent the last two years with the Kansas City Chiefs.
"We feel like Houston is a perfect fit and being from the state of Texas, Wade is excited to be able to continue his career in his home state," Parker said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports.
Parker declined to discuss the specifics of the contract. However, NFL sources told FOX 26 it is a 4-year contract worth $12 million.
"I'm very excited," Wade said in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "It's a great program, right on the cusp of going to the playoffs.
"I want to do my part to help us get over the hump and get in the playoffs."
Wade said this is a great moment in his life.
"It's a very big day, right up there with getting drafted as a rookie, " Wade said. "I'm getting my family into a comfortable situation.
"I am very grateful to the organization for giving me this opportunity."
During his stint with the Chiefs Smith played in 31 games, starting 16, playing mostly guard and center.
Smith began his career with the Miami Dolphins where he became only the third rookie in franchise history to start all 16 games at left tackle.
Smith was with the Dolphins for two more years playing in six games in 2004 and spending all of 2005 on injured reserve.
He then joined the New York Jets and was on their roster for two years playing in 23 games with no starts.
"We feel real good about it," said Gary Kubiak, Texans head coach, in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "This kid is going to give our football team a lot of flexibility.
"He is going to compete at guard and center. He's really a nice kid from Dallas."
