HOUSTON - The five grandest games of the decade involving the grand city of Houston. Which is Your Favorite? Read below to take a look at the options, and vote in the poll on the right.
Texas/USC, 2006 BCS Championship Game.
Vince proves almighty, all-but-unstoppable, forever Young and forever in Longhorn lore - a jaw-dropping 200 yards rushing, 267 yards passing and three touchdowns in bringing down the USC dynasty. His feet and arm churned all 125 yards in the Horns final two touchdown drives. His game-winning title-clinching romp came with :19 left and 10 plays after the dramatic denial on 4th-and-one (seemingly the one defensive stop of the night). In sum, Vince stamps the single-most scintillating bowl performance ever, seals UTs first national championship in 35 years and the elusive validating victory for Mack Brown.
Astros/Braves, Game 4, 2005 NLDS.
It required every last ounce of 18 innings and nearly six hours of Minute Maid game-time to include all the incomprehensible: an 8th-inning grand slam from Lance Berkman to launch a comeback from down 4-0, a two-out solo shot in the 9th from the always offensively anemic Brad Ausmus that ricocheted off a column in left-center and just above the yellow line signifying home run, a walk-off blast nine innings later from rookie Chris Burke that ends the series and the longest postseason game in MLB history. But not before the better-than-fiction blast from the bullpen by Rocket Roger. Clemens the last available pitcher, emerged on two days rest in the first relief stint in 21 big league seasons and proceeded to spin three one-hit shutout innings. Just another day at the big ball yard.
Texans Franchise Debut, 2002 regular-season opener.
A Sunday night worth to many every debit dollar of the $700m expansion fee paid by Bob McNair along with the $449m price tag for radiant Reliant Stadium. The expansion Texans bang with the Cowboys in the "Texas Super Bowl" and officially return the city to the NFL after the Bud Adams Bunch bolted for Tennessee at the end of 1996. Wonder boy quarterback David Carr notched a touchdown in his first NFL completion and later launched a 65-yard pitch-and-catch touchdown strike with Cory Bradford. The 19-10 stunner left Jerry Jones dripped in disgust. Now into their 8th season the franchise still searches for a moment as magical to match their grand debut.
Rockets/Spurs, November 2005.
What a way to rip a seven-game slide in an all too long lopsided series. Mister McGrady torches 13 of his 33 points in the final 35 seconds to wipe out an eight-point deficit. Yes, 13 points in the final 35 seconds. Try to keep up: top-of-the-key three-ball for 71-76, up-and-under on-the-way-down three-ball off Yao screen right of the key plus the Duncan foul for 75-78 at :24.3, pull-up 3-pointer over Bowen for 78-80 at :11.2, mad-capped after a Devin Brown turnover by left-side dribble-drive transition 3-pointer draining absolutely postiviely nothing but the bottom of the net at :01.7 to win 81-80. Quote from Jeff Van Gundy: "We got a miracle." Quote from Tracy: "I dont know how we won. I dont realize what I did."
Dynamo/Revolution, 2006 MLS Cup.
Soccer heads in the city got the kicks in the very first season after the franchise relocated from San Jose. Brian Ching knotted the stare-down in Frisco in the second half of the extra time and for the first time in league history the title game would be decided on penalty kicks. Kelly Gray and Stuart Holden opened the best-of-five set with goals, Dwayne De Rosario and Ching then converted. Pat Onsteads save ignited delirium and delivered the championship. Dy-no-mite!
