UH Concerned Over Late Game Tactics

HOUSTON - The University of Houston has asked Conference USA to review the frequency of injury time-outs taken late in the game by SMU and Tulsa in their games against the Cougars.

Houston beat the Golden Hurricanes in Tulsa Saturday 46-45 and beat SMU in Houston three weeks ago 38-15.

Houston athletics director Mack Rhoades made the inquiry with the conference office this week.

"It's a fine line because certainly injuries are injuries and you want your student-athletes well-being first and foremost," Rhoades said in an interview Tuesday with FOX 26 Sports.

"Certainly there's been some instances and it happens with fast-tempo offenses, etc. All we did was call the conference office and just said hey I think it's something that you need to look at and really discuss at the end of the year. Do we incorporate something like the NFL does? Where the last two minutes there's an injury it (costs a team) a time out. If you don't have any time-outs then it's seconds off the clock, etc."

Rhoades said making the inquiry to the league office is as far UH has taken it.

"I just think in terms of the spirit of the game it's something that we need to look at in the future," Rhoades said.

The Cougars are 8-1 and next play Central Florida Saturday in Orlando.
