NFL Player Cracks Head Open With Helmet

Seattle Seahawks fullback Owen Schmitt is used to dishing out punishment to opponents on the football field, but the three-year veteran inadvertently took out his aggression on himself before Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Schmitt was so pumped up for the game that he pounded his helmet into his forehead several times after coming out of the tunnel in pregame introductions ( see video below ). Schmitt then ran into the middle of his teammates with blood covering his entire face and whipped them into a frenzy.

The motivational tactic apparently worked as the Seahawks went on to blowout the Jaguars 41-0. "That was, man, gruesome but beautiful at the same time," linebacker Lofa Tatupu told the Seattle Post-Intelligencer . "I don't know if that's possible. But that got us going."

Trainers had to attend to Schmitt during the national anthem as blood covered his face and seeped onto his uniform. They finally had him ready to take the field on the second play from scrimmage.

This isn't the first time Schmitt has pounded his head with his helmet. After he shanked a pooch punt in college at West Virginia, he was seen slamming his helmet into his head on the sidelines.

Schmitt's self-inflicted wound also brings back memories of Gus Frerrote's infamous head butt into the concrete wall ( see video below ) after he threw a touchdown for the Washington Redskins in 1997. Other athletes who have injured themselves in strange ways include baseball players John Smoltz, who burned his chest while ironing a shirt he was still wearing, and Marty Cordova, who missed several games in 2002 after burning himself when he fell asleep in a tanning booth.
