HOUSTON - Mayor bill White made it official Friday. He is now running for governor of Texas--a decision he says he made after taking the pulse of the community.
"Could you imagine what would happen if we had inclusive leadership we could brighten the star on the lone star state?" White asks.
For nearly a year White has focused on running for senate. But when Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison decided not to step down he turned his sights on the state's gubernatorial seat.
Once White gets past the primary he could face either incumbent Rick Perry or Hutchison.
"There will be those for their partisan political careers who will seek to diminish the achievement of this administration...we should not put up with Texans who put other people down," White says.
Mayor White doesn't know the half of it. FOX 26 news has learned some members of the GOP have already started requesting hundreds of documents from city hall. Documents that could show bill white as the man not fit to lead Texas.
"I think there are going to be a lot of entities doing that we may be one of those entities," Jared Woodfill with the Harris County GOP says.
Woodfill calls White a political opportunist who is running for governor only because its his last option. Woodfill says they want to expose Texans to the real bill White.
Woodfill draws the line at personal attacks. In the meantime the mayor says his campaign will be about the issues: education, health care, and the future of Texas.
