HOUSTON - A unique summer camp is about to celebrate its first decade, helping children of tragedy.

Every year, Champions Kids Camp brings together about 180 very special youngsters near Alvin.

All the campers have one thing in common: they have survived illness, accident or personal loss.

The kids spend five full days with others who can best understand their emotional scars, having experienced similar crises.

“For that one week, they don’t have to worry about whether they’re going to get a meal or not,” says camp co-founder Bill Nash, “because they’re going to get three meals. And they’re going to get pizza at night before they go to bed.”

Champions Kids Camp was started in 2001 by Nash and his wife Kim, country musicians whose performances help raise money to keep the camp going.

It costs $500 to sponsor each child. The counselors and support staff volunteer their time for the week.

Campers will begin arriving next weekend.
