HOUSTON - It appears the Alief School District's three-and-a-half year legal campaign against the parents of a disabled student will continue even though the entire school board claims the battle has been waged behind their back.
Four years ago the parents of autistic student Chuka Chibuogwu challenged the way Alief was educating their special needs son. The fight was heated and the family ultimately gave up. Instead of letting the case die, Alief and its lawyers have been suing the family in federal court for legal fees.
If the District wins the Chibuogwu family will be bankrupted.
Last week FoOX 26 broke the news that the board was completely blind sided by our previous report of the lawsuit, estimated to have cost Alief taxpayers a quarter million dollars so far. The board met Tuesday with outgoing superintendent Louis Stoerner and attorney Eric Nichols to get answers.
Multiple sources tell Fox 26 a majority of the board has decided to continue the lawsuit that Stoerner and Nichols apparently kept secret.
A call to board members was not returned. Last week, AISD did comment on the litigation.
"Actions taken by the family contributed to the expense of the litigation and our efforts in this case are only to recoup tax payers dollars."
Alief teacher and activist Errol Jones says pressure on the board to drop the case is building.
"I think the lawsuit should end. I think the community should demand that it ends. I think there should be a major uproar because if they are going to sue this parent when is it going to be your turn next," Jones said.
