HOUSTON - When a son falls in the service of his nation, there are no words capable of easing the ache or softening the blow.
On Monday when two U.S. Army Sergeants arrived at his home, Jesus Infante knew the news would not be good.
"Well, my heart is real broken right now," Infante said - his voice nearly a whisper.
From battle zone Afghanistan it was the hardest kind of news.
United States Army Staff Sergeant Jessie Infante, Sam Houston High Graduate and veteran of two combat tours, was killed in action by an improvised explosive device.
"I just, I just don't know why it happened," said Jessie's sister, Jessica Infante, tears tumbling down her face
"He was a great dad, he was a great son and he was a great soldier," said Jesus Infante of his son.
Those who gathered at the Infante home to mourn and remember say Jessie Infante fought for America by choice having gladly re-enlisted this spring.
They insist he knew and accepted the danger, encouraged his brothers to serve and told his father a "dream job" would soon be within his reach.
"He was working real hard to be a drill sergeant. That was his goal," said Jesus with pride.
Jessie Infante was 30-years-old. He leaves behind a 6-year-old daughter who got to know him and an unborn child who will not.
