HOUSTON - A letter carrier was arrested on accusations he stole cash from the mail he was supposed to deliver.
Mark Montanez, 35, was charged with mail theft, shortly after surrendering to agents with the United States Postal Service on Thursday morning.
USPS agents conducted an investigation after hearing a complaint that cash was missing from pieces of mail placed for deliver at the Woodlands Metro Station.
Montanez was assigned to that delivery route, according to the Texas Attorney General Office’s statement.
A Houston jury indicted Montanez on Aug.19.
He worked as a career technician for USPS since Nov. 13, 2004.
If convicted, Montanez faces a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
