HOUSTON - Apparently, that burning ball in the sky can be used for something other than rampant heat advisories and excessive photosynthesis.
The Houston Zoo is now the owner of 7 golf carts, retrofitted to use the power of the sun.
Zoo staff got help with the green upgrade from a volunteer solar expert team from Reliant Energy and NRG Energy, according to a Houston Zoo statement.
The recent retrofit is part of a 2-year conversion plan for all of the Zoo’s golf carts as they make the transition from electric to solar-powered vehicles.
The conversion is being supported by a $50,000 donation from both Reliant and NRG.
