HOUSTON - A new feature on the Houston Independent School District website is causing some to take a double take.
The website, HISD.org, is known for offering important facts to hundreds of thousands of parents.
But the site has launched a new page. Its called Myth Busters..
HISD insists Myth Busters is its platform to clear up confusion.
It launched over the weekend, and tackled two topics that have gotten a lot of media attention: Apollo 20 schools, and a reduction in special education teachers.
Brian Smith is an assistant professor at the University of Houston.
He specializes in social media and is concerned even about the name of the feature itself.
"They call it Myth Busters. They've already established that everything they're going to talk about is a myth. Second of all a problem is they're not putting any information on there where people can come back and give feedback and say well I heard this. There is no back and forth."
HISD would only respond with a written statement saying it's working to ensure the community has up-to-date and accurate information about the district.
It continues with, "As any large company knows, rumors can spread quickly and take on a life of their own, even when factually incorrect. The purpose of the new Myth Busters page on our website is to help clarify misinformation and dispel rumors."
