HOUSTON - Everyone wants a little peace and tranquility. But who’d have thought you could find it in a tank?
A local company offers time in one of its two “flotation tanks.”
They look like oversized tubs topped with space-age lids, filled with 250 gallons of water maintained at skin temperature.
“There's 800 pounds of epsom salts in the water,” Float Houston owner Michelle DeRouen said. “So it's like the Dead Sea, you can't sink if you wanted to.”
Nor can you think for long, said Angelle Mouton, who enjoys floating for up to 90 minutes.
“It's similar to meditating,” said Mouton, “in that I can finally not think of anything and my mind gets to rest.”
“After about 5 minutes,” added DeRouen, “you can't tell where your body ends and where the water begins.”
The float tanks help relieve pain and stress, said DeRouen, who runs the company out of her northwest Houston home.
She got the idea for the business after experiencing the tank as a customer on a trip to London.
“I thought, ‘Oh that's neat; I'm going to try that,’” said DeRouen. “And I fell in love with it and I thought, ‘I need to bring this back to Houston, this is really good stuff!’”
Now, DeRouen’s two tanks cater to meditators, athletes, students and the merely curious.
DeRouen said Float Houston is the only service of its kind in the Bayou City.
