HOUSTON - An amendment to the Galveston smoking ban allows customers of a niche business smoke indoors.
Galveston City Council unanimously passed Thursday an amendment that permits smoking in retail tobacco shops, according to a statement issued by the city. However, the amendment is exclusive to stores that prohibit on-premise alcohol consumption and bar minors from their establishments.
Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas and Councilwoman Susan Fennewald were absent from the meeting, according to the statement.
In July, the city banned smoking in bars, restaurants, private clubs, and outdoor seating areas. The measure also banned smoking within 15 feet of any business' main doors.
The amended ordinance will take effect on Jan. 1.
