Firefighters were kept busy with two separate fires at apartment complexes in southeast Houston.
A combination of heavy smoke and fire was seen coming from an upstairs apartment unit before 12 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Nathaniel Street and Ledge Street.
Firefighters knocked down the flames within 10 minutes after making what they called a "fast attack." No residents or firefighters were hurt in the fire.
Investigators determined that the fire started in the chimney and while only one unit was damaged by fire, surrounding units had smoke and water damage.
The Houston Fire Department arrived at approximately 1 a.m. Monday to another apartment complex fire at the intersection of Bellfort Avenue and Stone Street.
The first HFD unit to arrive found heavy flames coming from an upstairs unit and managed to prevent the fire from spreading into the building's attic, which could have caused the fire to consume the entire building.
One apartment unit had heavy fire damage while two neighboring units had smoke and water damage. A female resident who was inside the burning unit was able to escape the fire safely and no one was injured.
Arson investigators are trying to determine what caused the second fire.
