HOUSTON - Kennetra Parker and her boyfriend, Deandre Elliot, have been going together since the sixth grade.
But seconds after he left her Southeast Houston apartment Thursday night just before midnight, everything changed.
“I closed the door and all I heard was gunshots,” she said.
The teen heard gunshots followed by a knock at the front door.
It was Elliot.
The 17-year-old Worthing High School Junior had just been shot in the head and chest. “My momma's like open the door and he just fell right there on the ground and I couldn't do anything but cry and scream," she said. Elliot was dead.
Witnesses saw a man in his early 20’s take off in Elliot’s 1993 blue-green Buick Park Avenue with Texas license plate #552-GNK. Elliot’s brother thinks he was killed for his custom wire spoke wheels.
“We don't have no idea right now but whoever did it they need to come and confess up to it, that ain't right, not over no rims, man," said the victim’s brother Demarcus Pickens.
Elliot was the star running back on the Worthing High School football team. HISD grief counselors were at the school on Friday to help any students having a tough time with the loss.
“My brother, like he was the kindest dude, he was the coolest dude you'll ever know, he was going somewhere in his life, whoever did it they was weak, you took somebody's life over a set of rims," said the victim’s brother Deslond Elliot.
Police have not yet recovered the stolen Buick. Community activist Quanell X is planning a prayer vigil for the fallen student on Sunday at 5pm at the Cullen Park Apartments on Wenda in southeast Houston.
