HOUSTON - A set of grandparents make a gruesome discovery on the city's
north side. A horrible smell leads them to the remains of a
grandchild they didn’t know existed.
It happened at the Sherwood Glen Apartment Complex off
Sherwood Lane near TC Jester on the city's north side.
Investigators say the grandparents were visiting their 24-year-old
daughter when a foul smell led them to her bathroom.
Inside that bathroom, under a sink, the grandparents found an
old blanket. They threw it in a dumpster, but quickly fished it out
when their daughter made a heartbreaking confession: their
grandchild was inside.
"When they discovered what was inside the blanked they contacted police," said Jack Harvey, an investigator with the Houston Police Department. "The patrol officers found what appeared to be the mummified remains of an infant. It was wrapped up and stored inside the house."
Investigators are now waiting on the results of an autopsy to
determine if a crime was committed.
They're questioning the baby's 24-year-old mother , who was
seen sitting in the back of this police patrol car Wednesday
night.
According to investigators, she says she delivered a baby boy
stillborn on Sept. 18. No one was at her apartment on Thursday to
answer any of our questions.
Monica Herrera also lives at the Sherwood Glen Apartment
Complex. Herrera can't understand why a 24-year-old woman with
three other kids would stash the baby's remains in her home, even
if it was stillborn.
"She should've called the ambulance, gone to the
hospital,” Herrera said. “That's the only thing you can
do."
Child Protective Services is also investigating.
