HOUSTON - The non-profit group Military Moms and Wives of Brazoria County carefully create care packages for our troops stationed all over the world.
But all volunteer Jean Easterling cared about Thursday night was if her son was safe. "It's pretty scary and I just keep praying," she said.
Michael Easterling, 26, is stationed at Fort Hood in Killeen where a dozen people were killed and dozens wounded in a mass shooting Thursday. Jean tried to call her son all day with no luck.
"It's almost like when he was in Iraq and he almost got hurt over there, I'm just praying he's okay."
"Over there." In other words, in the heart of battle where every soldier and parent expects danger. That's why so many are baffled by this tragic shooting on American soil.
"Not only do we worry about our loved ones in war zones fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, but now we have to worry in our own backyard," said Mary Moreno, founder of the organization.
