Detectives are investigating a fire that gutted the home of a small town mayor in Montgomery County.
Just after New Caney firefighters responded to Roman Forest Mayor Floyd Jackson's home on Roman Forest Drive, smoke that was pluming out of the house had erupted into a two-alarm fire that burst through the roof.
Jackson, who has served as Roman Forest's mayor for a decade, was at a lodge and his wife was at their son's home when the fire broke out Tuesday evening.
A neighbor said he originally thought leaves were burning in the backyard but then noticed flames through the kitchen window.
Investigators say appears to have started in the kitchen, but an investigation is ongoing.
No one was injured during the fire, but the home sustained heavy loss.
Jackson is not up for re-election this year.
