On Wednesday the American Planning Association (APA) named Montrose one of the top ten great places in America.
The honor was a wonderful surprise for city leaders who have been worrying for years about the neighborhood's crumbling in infrastructure. The city is spending millions of dollars to redo streets in the Montrose, modernize sewer systems and renovate parks and recreation centers.
City council member Wanda Adams wants the neighborhood declared a historic district.
“What we don’t want to happen is for some builder to come in and want to buy some of the older homes, tear them down, and take away the character (of the neighborhood),” said Adams.
Some residents worry declaring Montrose a historic district may make it difficult for residents to remodel their property.
