Hundreds of Texas law enforcement officers attended the funeral Friday for a Chambers County Sheriff's deputy killed in the line of duty.
The funeral for Deputy Shane Detweiler started at 10 a.m. at the Maranatha Church in Mont Belvieu.
Detwiler's widow, Trish Detwiler, said she wanted her husband to be remembered as more than a peace officer.
"I could list all the many accomplishments of Shane's professional life," She said. "But what I want all of you to remember is character."
Visitation for Detweiler took place Thursday evening at Eagle Heights Fellowship Church in Mont Belvieu.
Detweiler died after investigators say former Kenefick Police Department officer Gilbert Ortez shot him. Investigators later found Ortez dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The confrontation between Detweiler and Ortez took place when the deputy arrived in response to a complaint of someone shooting toward a water company meter reader, according to investigators. The utility worker was prepared to shut off service to Ortez's home, but investigators say Ortez's common law wife Pamela Leggett shot toward the meter reader.
