HOUSTON - Stafford police are investigating the death of a Nigerian man found unconscious after an off-duty Houston officer detains him.
Around 2 a.m. Saturday, the Stafford Police Department received a 911 call from someone who said a Houston Police Department officer was detaining someone and needed backup.
When Stafford police arrived, they found Syulvanus Okhueleigbe lying on the floor unconscious.
Medics at the scene said Okhueleigbe had a pulse but wasn't breathing. He was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Stafford police said they are waiting for the Harris County Medical Examiner's Office to determine a cause of death.
In the meantime, Houston Police Department officials said they've also launched a parallel investigation into the incident.
Houston police said Thomas Harris, the officer who was making the arrest, has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of the Stafford Police Department's investigation.
