Close Call With Drunk Means Dogs Must Go

The push is on to find new homes for more than 60 dogs after the owner of a no-kill animal shelter is hit by a woman who was driving drunk.

Wilma Morales has operated Mr. K's Pet Shelter for a decade. The shelter currently houses 86 dogs in Caldwell, Texas.

Morales and three dogs were headed home from an adoption drive at the Houston Home and Garden Show in March when their truck was struck by the drunk driver.

Last week, according to court records, 49-year old Susan Blythe Wilson pleaded guilty to DWI and was sentenced to ten days in jail and a license suspension of one year.

"She has no idea how much her night of drinking has cost the animals at Mr. K's," said Morales, whose shoulder and arm were injured in the wreck.

A CT scan immediately afterward also revealed that Morales, who is uninsured, has an ovarian cyst.

Fearing she will require surgery, Morales is desperately trying to adopt out at least 60 of her dogs before her next medical appointment in mid-July.

"I can't lift the 50 pound bags of dog food the way I used to do," said Morales. "I can't physically take care of the dogs the way I was taking care of them before the wreck."
