As summer officially begins this weekend city pools will be packed with people trying to beat the heat. But a Hockley family wants to send a message to all parents of little swimmers -- watch them closely.

Justin Carter, 10, nearly drowned on Wednesday at an Humble city pool. He was swimming "up and down" in the deep end, but didn't come back up.

"All I remember is going up and down and screaming for help," said Carter.

His older brother Nathan, 11, ran for help. Lifeguards pulled Justin from the water. He was unconscious.

A retired firefighter gave Justin CPR.

"I knelt down and was screaming 'this is not your time, this is not your time. You gotta come back, start breathing,'" said the boy's grandmother Kathryn Swift. "He almost died in that pool."

After about 45 seconds of CPR, Justin woke up and ended up spending the night in the hospital. He is now a "survivor."

A Texas City toddler isn't so lucky. The baby boy drowned in a backyard swimming pool just one day after Justin's close call.

"Don't take anything for granted, always keep an eye on them, you never know how fast it can happen. You can look away for a second and they're gone," said Justin's mother Jackie Carter.

So far this year, 50 peope have drowned statewide and the summer hasn't even officially begun.

There have been nearly a dozen drownings so far in Harris County.
