Getting his son Mikey in and out of his truck is part of the daily routine for Ron Johnson...and in and out of the house.

Mikey is 31 years old and suffers from Huntington's Chorea, a terminal disease that targets the victim's neurological systems. causing the constant hitting you see Mikey doing now.

"It's taking away his ability to speak, to swallow, to walk," Johnson explained. "Its going to come to a point where he can't walk at all."

As Mikey regresses mentally, he also looses his physical capabilities.

Ron's wife, Mikey's mother died of the disease.

But despite the dismal prognosis, Ron wants to maintain Mikey's quality of life. And that means keeping him mobile.

Unfortunately, his electric wheelchair weighs over 200 pounds. Johnson can't simply toss it into the back of his pickup truck. So Johnson contacted Take it to Akin for help.

"(We) have to have a lift or that chair doesn't go anywhere,"Johnson said.

As Mikey made it perfectly clear to Reporter Emily Akin, he needs to be mobile.

"'Cause every body needs to go somewhere," Mikey explained.

So Akin contacted Adaptive Driving Access in Pasadena.

ADA's mission is to help the handicapped keep mobile. ADA owner Tom Poole said he and his crew could get Mikey's dad a wheelchair lift.

"The reason we started this business 15 years ago is that we had a family member who was injured in a car accident. He needed this type of equipment. It's gratifying when you can help people," Poole said.

ADA has ordered the lift and will install it within the next few weeks.
