HOUSTON - When the Houston Monument Company locked its gates, dozens of it's customers were left with no way to retreive the headstones for their loved ones' grave sites. Many of the monuments were paid for, some were even finished.
In December, Pamela Mitchell and her family made a $750 down payment for her mother's grave marker. She has never seen it. Connie De Los Santos could actually see her son's grave marker inside the fence. They and many others contacted Take it to Akin wanting to know what could be done.
So Emily Akin checked it out. No one from Houston Monument returned her calls. A visit to the Monument Company's work yard was more productive.
Bobby Schlitzberger of Schlitzberger and Daughters Monuments was on the property trying to help consumers find their merchandise.
According to Schlitzberger, the owners of Houston Monument had hit hard times and offered to sell him the unused material. Schlitzberger agreed.
In the process of moving the material, he opened the gates for
customers who had been waiting months to retrieve their loved one's
gravemarker. He was able to help Pamela and Connie, delivering the
gravemarkers to the appropriate cemetery.
